Dmitry Ontoev, Head of Laboratory of Regional Studies at SKOLKOVO Institute for Emerging Markets Studies gave a lecture on soft power of Russia and China in Central Asia for the participants of the V International Russian-Chinese Summer School on International Relations, organized by the HSE and the East China Normal University (Shanghai, China). Dmitry Ontoev outlined the main theoretical approaches to understanding the concept of soft power and assessed the reviewed the goals and instruments of soft power policy implemented by Russia and China, as well as other actors in the region - Turkey, Iran, the US and EU. He also briefly analyzed the destructive soft power of terrorist organization ISIL in Central Asia and highlighted the risks that may trouble Russia and China.
